Rough Linearity

December 2012

Competition for re-development of IOI research center at Hogeschool Rotterdam.

IOI research center newly moved in a new location in Rotterdam Delfhaven. It occupies the 3rd floor of one of Hogeschool Rotterdam buildings.IOI includes six different departments, that all work in several field within the city of Rotterdam. Therefore the research center is on a continuous development and growth. After visiting the building the design strategy focuses on two main aspects: evolution and connectivity. The design of the floor should be flexible and it should be able to change layout easily and quickly. It can grow and evolve as IOI does.An open connectivity between entrance, rooms and corridor is also needed.Rough Linearity creates a visual connection by introducing in the space a line of material, which provides several functions and modules. We achieved this by combining the technique of layering corrugated cardboard boards and play with the role of each layer in order to create different scenarios.Single of group of layers can move and so change the perception of the whole module. It provides new experiences and a flexible environment for a working space. The different modules can be combined together and moved around by the users. Rotating table can create an instant meeting spot. Light installation can be carried around as well as cube chairs, stools and benches. A floor trace of cardboard keeps all the rooms and the modules visually connected.
